Motor boat with sails

Our urge to jump on a sailing trip and the struggle we went through finding an embarcation had us give little consideration to the type of boat we were stepping on. In our case, it’s been a Bali 4.8; a 48 feet Catamaran from the brand Katana. Those type of boats are closer from the luxurious sailing camping car than actual sailing boats. Moreover the tight setup of their sails make them suitable for sailing in only very specific conditions (with a wind roughly between 90° to 145°), in other words they are not designed to go up winds (few catamarans are) and are most suited for a side wind or larg wind. This is also due to the particular application/use of such boats, they are pleasure crafts made (in our case) for a charter organization renting it for a few days to a week. Most focus is put on the comfort of the boat over its actual ability to sail, it is thus backed by two 85HP engines. Such characteristics made us wonder if we really did a sustainable operation by favoring those over a plane ticket or even staying in Europe. As a word of caution, this is a very tortuous topic for us as it represent colliding values of sustainability vs alterity & travel. We’ll try here to lay down our calculations in the most open way as long as our train of thoughts about this whole crossing : On the footprint of our trip // Liters of gasoil used since //
